Rights Respecting Schools

UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where ALL children are respected, their talents are nurtured and ALL are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives the children at GJS the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Godalming Junior School is very proud to be the only Godalming school with the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award and we achieved our GOLD status in 2023. Being a Rights Respecting School is a fundamental part of the school's identity. Being a GOLD standard RRS school is the highest level of the Award and is granted to schools that have fully embedded the principles of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child into their ethos and curriculum. The children's rights are learned, understood and lived at GJS and respectful behaviours are modelled throughout the school by both adults and children alike. Being a Rights Respecting School informs our school curriculum, is evident in weekly assemblies and Circle Times and even informs school policies. There are 3 articles that most closely align to our Love, Live, Lean motto:

Article 19 - Every child has a right to feel safe - Love
Article 31 - Every child has a right to relax and play - Live
Article 28 - Every child has a right to an education - Learn

Below are resources and links offering further insight into the Rights Respecting Schools Award and some of the work we do keep the status alive at our happy, safe and inclusive school.
For schools or for others wanting to find out more, the Headteacher Adam Samson would be more than happy to talk about the RRS Award and is willing to support other schools wishing to start their journey. Simply contact the school office.
